Mentoring
Mentoring
Our mentors should meet certain criteria but should also be laser focused in their personal and professional relationships with youth/students as they guide their development into adulthood. As a mentor, you should be a motivator and should create your own mentoring philosophy which can help guide you throughout the phases of the mentoring relationship, but particularly in the early phase of establishing a clear purpose and goals. We believe that if our mentors can complete the following goals, our youth will complete our mentoring program(s) ready to become citizens able to contribute to our communities and society as a whole:
- Identify Mentee goals
- Identify what motivates the mentee
- Develop a relationship founded on mutual respect
- Create a safe environment in which honesty and free exchange of feedback can occur
- Instill ownership of goals/projects in the mentee
- Share your own experiences
- Evaluate the mentee’s learning level
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the relationship (not all mentor/mentee relationships are the best fit)
- Provide options and paths toward helping the mentee ultimately reach their goals
- Provide feedback and stay engaged with the mentee’s parents and/or guardians
